The opening sugya of Ha-Or Veha-Rotev is therefore far more than a technical discussion of stems, husks, bones, and peels.
It asks what constitutes an object before the law.
The categories of yad and shomer demonstrate that the halakhic boundary of a thing need not coincide with the boundary of its edible material. Function and protection can extend legal identity outward.
Yet that extension is not limitless.
Rav insists upon thresholds. Rabbi Yoḥanan grants greater independence to the underlying relation. Rashi and Ramban sharpen the disagreement by revealing that protection and handling need not obey identical principles.
The intervention of beriah then destabilizes a purely quantitative account.
