In the Torah (Leviticus 17:13), we are commanded to cover the blood of kosher wild animals (ḥayyot) and birds after they have been slaughtered:
"And any man of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who hunts any beast or bird that may be eaten, shall pour out its blood and cover it with earth."
This obligation does not apply to domesticated animals (behemah), but only to wild animals and birds.
The Sages and later commentators offered different explanations for this commandment.
