Motivation as Key to Leadership in the Coast Guard Auxiliary

This paper examines the critical role of motivation in leadership effectiveness within the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, with particular attention to current retention and attrition challenges. Drawing on recent data and established motivational theories, this research analyzes how leadership approaches informed by Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory, and Thomas' Intrinsic Motivation Model can be leveraged to improve volunteer retention. The study highlights how effective motivational leadership strategies can address the unique challenges faced by the Coast Guard Auxiliary in maintaining its volunteer force amidst changing demographics and increasing operational demands. Recommendations are provided for leadership development programs that emphasize motivational approaches tailored to the volunteer environment.
